Tragedy at Lake Mendocino Claims Ukiah Football Star Tommy Burke
The body of 17 year old Tommy Burke was recovered from Lake Mendocino four days after he was thrown from a motorboat during a Saturday outing with Ukiah High School football teammates. Burke, a defensive tackle on the 1971 NBL champion team, disappeared beneath the propeller area after the boat swerved. The incident stunned Ukiah as classes resumed and plans for a football dinner were postponed. Burke is survived by his parents Bob and Judnita Burke, brothers Jerry Bob and John, and sister Debbie Hohnstein. Funeral mass set for St Marys Church with burial to follow at Ukiah Catholic Cemetery. Burial arrangements handled by Zimmerman Mortuary.
