Army Chief of Staff Abrams Dies at 59
Army Chief Creighton W. Abrams, famed for leading the Bastogne relief and shaping Vietnam withdrawal, died at Walter Reed Hospital at 12:35 a.m. EDT less than a day before his 60th birthday. He leaves a wife Julia and six children. Abrams, a Catholic convert, battled cancer after lung surgery and worsening clots, and will be buried at Arlington.<string>

Youthful hijacker surrenders plane after ransom demand
A 20-year-old Marshall Collins III of Providence held Eastern Airlines captain Lewis Whittaker at knife point on a DC9 shuttle from LaGuardia to Logan for nearly four hours. He demanded 10000 dollars for the poor, then surrendered as FBI and Boston police surrounded the jet. Whittaker, lightly wounded, was treated at an airport clinic. the plane later emptied its passengers and crew except for the hijacker.
