About 100 witnesses attended the ceremony at the Lake County courthouse as Ukiah attorney John L. Golden took the oath administered by County Clerk James Shinn to become Lake County Superior Court judge. He succeeds retiring Judge Ralph DeVoto who left June 10. Golden, a Boalt Hall graduate and longtime solo practitioner, has held roles in the State Bar and California Board of Legal Specialization. The appointment was praised by the Mendocino County Bar Association.

Fiery crash kills air tanker pilot near Hopland
A 56-year-old air tanker pilot from Mesa died when his Grumman F7F crashed near Hopland while fighting a fire. The firefighting crew reported the plane clipped a tree during pullout, igniting a brush fire that burned three acres northeast of the John Feliz ranch. Benedict served with Sis-Q Flying Service under state forestry contract and had 15 years as a tanker pilot. Investigators from the FAA combed the scene to determine the cause. Benedict is survived by his wife Mary and two sons Rod and William. services will be held in Mesa.

A 47-year-old Salt Lake City man, Eugene Michel, is stable at Stanford Medical Center after receiving the heart of 24-year-old Ralph Clemons of Garberville who died from injuries in a head on crash near Willits on Aug 23. Dr. Norman Shumway led the five hour operation.
