Kennedy seeks stay on Mary Jo Kopechne inquest

Attorneys for Edward Kennedy filed for a temporary restraining order and writ of certiorari to halt an Edgartown inquest into Mary Jo Kopechne death. A 2:15 p.m. hearing before Justice Paul C. Reardon sought to ensure defense rights and prevent a criminal trial atmosphere in the preliminary inquiry.

Governors Back Federal Takeover to Fund Welfare

Colorado Springs reports that all but Gov. Maddox support a push for the federal government to assume full welfare costs. Gov. Rockefeller and others press for universal national health insurance as a welfare reform move, arguing federal responsibility and economic growth finance. Maddox resists, claiming many aid recipients are unnecessary, while Nixon cautions against optimistic budget dreams.

Nixon pushes federal welfare boost at Governors Conference

Nixon outlined a $4 billion increase in federal welfare aid arguing it serves the nation’s needs wherever they arise and criticising regional bias. He dismissed hopes for automatic dividends from Vietnam settlement or growth, saying priorities must guide allocations. Rockefeller warned that without war surtax revenue federal totals would grow 15 to 20 billion annually through 1976 and proposed 35 to 40 percent go to state and local programs.

Car crash reports from county hospital victims

News brief item recounts several traffic crashes. Diegelman, 18, of Santa Rosa, and another passenger were ejected and seriously injured, transported to County Hospital. Robert Calvon McBride, 27, of Willits, lost control after a tire blowout, fell 20 feet off a highway embankment near the NWP underpass, taken to Howard Memorial Hospital with possible moderate injuries. John Tye, 54, of Oakland, lost control on a curve near Fort Bragg, taken to Fort Bragg with possible major injuries. Other names include Vernon West, 20, and Prniner injuries noted. Police Chief Announces Three Department Promotions

Police Chief Donn Saulebury announced three promotions this morning within the department. Harold Shea was promoted to captain, with 5 years of service. Robert Bowman, a patrolman since 1959, will serve as head of the patrol division.

Narcotics raid nets arrests in San Francisco stakeout

A months long narcotics investigation led to a raid on a San Francisco pad on California Baker Street. Jennifer Wren Susan McCoy and Sheryl Meadows were jailed, juvenile a one year old held by authorities. Det Leon Miller led the Ukiah San Francisco Novato Petaluma team. Twelve officers seized marijuana valued at $10 000 and drugs including mescaline and LSD. Ten people were arrested with charges of possession and possession for sale. Police also recovered $1 009 in cash and 3 000 LSD tablets.

Laytonville Man Charged After Tavern Shooting

Laytonville resident William Adrian Scott, 68, was arrested after a bar shooting in Laytonville where Rusty Bolton, 31, was wounded in the arm with a .22 pistol following an argument. Deputies traced Scott to Dos Rios, where roadblocks and a search led to his arrest outside a Dos Rios quarry.

U.S. Toll Rises Over Holiday Weekend With 612 Traffic Deaths

United Press International tally shows 612 people were killed in traffic from Friday 6 p.m. to Monday midnight, part of a Labor Day record drop from 688 last year. Drownings reached 101, planes 44, misc 44, California led with 68 deaths, Texas 50, New York 31, and several states reported automotive fatalities while others had none.

Evans officers face court martial for Evans disaster

The U S Navy ordered the court martial of captain and deck officer of the destroyer Frank E Evans on charges of negligence and dereliction of duty after a collision with an Australian aircraft carrier. 74 sailors died when the Evans sank following a severed bow section. An inquiry blamed the Evans for the tragedy while Australian captain John P Stevenson was absolved of guilt. McLemore and Ramsey were cited for failures in night orders and bridge duties during high speed maneuvers.
