Army McCarthy reports split blame over McCarthy and Stevens

Washington (UP) The final Army McCarthy report fuels censure calls against Senator McCarthy and pressures Eisenhower to retire Army Secretary Stevens. Senate investigators issued separate verdicts after eight weeks of dispute. Both reports fault McCarthy and Stevens and cite possible perjury in testimony. Two-Year-Old Hit by Car On Arlington Drive

Pamela Gibson, 2, of 249 Arlington Drive, was struck by a car driven by Alice Marie Peaslee, 33, of 1998 Elm Street, near Pine Street. Pamela sustained a fractured clavicle and possible skull injury and was hospitalized after initial care at Mendocino Medical Center. Police cited Peaslee for driving without a license.

Two Injured In Tuesday Drasties

On Tuesday morning the Covelo road 14 miles east of the Redwood highway a pickup driven by William Denham of Oroville went over the bank causing major injuries to the driver who was taken to Howard Memorial hospital at Willits by a passing motorist. The accident occurred at 2am Patrolman Roy Burton investigated and Denham said he was blinded by headlights from an oncoming vehicle and lost control of his truck. The report notes an illegal left turn involving William Chapman of Laytonville and James Millican of Longvale both Chevrolets.

Polio fund tops $5000 as county reports new victim

Roger Dale Elliott, 11, son of Mr and Mrs Benjamin Elliott of 1048 Locust Street Willits, confirmed as the county's 23rd polio case this year. He is at Sonoma County Hospital Santa Rosa under Dr Robert B Smalley. A possible 24th case cited, diagnosis not yet confirmed. Ukiah drive totals pass $5000. Kiwanis dunking booth nets $718.40. Western Nevada Suffers Yet Another Earthquake

Reno and surrounding communities felt a third tremor in three months at 3:22 pm PDT and 10:22 pm. Residents in Reno Fallon Winnemucca Lovelock and Carson City reported shaking. No damage or injuries were reported but Fallon sheriff’s office noted ongoing caution in what locals dubbed Earthquake Alley.

LeBaron to Own Ukiah's Morty's Historic Storefront

Robert H. LeBaron of Napa will take possession Wednesday September 15 of Morty's at State and Smith street Ukiah a long standing establishment in the city. LeBaron with prior merchandising experience in Napa and a seven year gap in business will move his family to Ukiah and run Morty's after purchasing it from prior owner C N Mortensen. The sale continues a thread of Ukiah retail history linked to Mortensen and early local figures who gathered there by the fireplace and helped shape area leisure and golf lore.

Gem Ranch Sold to Massengills by Olive C. Jackson

Dr. and Mrs. James B. Massengill have purchased the Gem Ranch at the west end of Park Boulevard from Mrs. Olive C. Jackson. Possession will be taken in 30 days. The new owners plan to enjoy the property's living environment without alterations and may offer the Massengill home on the Lafon Tract for sale.

Frank Petersen Named Deputy District Attorney

Frank S. Petersen, 32, was appointed second deputy district attorney by James Busch. The new post carries a 4200 dollar annual salary. Petersen, of Ukiah, will begin October 1 after earning a 1951 law degree from the University of San Francisco. He and his family reside in Ukiah Village. Merle Orchard, the district attorney elect, praised the choice and plans to appoint another deputy when he assumes office January 1.

Eight-Year-Old Boy Drowns at Eureka

Eight-year-old Danny Warren Buck, son of Mr and Mrs Val Buck of Rio Dell, drowned in the Eel River after being thrown from a drifting song while he and a cousin played.

McGuire Named County Surveyor to Replace Resigning Richardson

Frank McGuire of Potter Valley was appointed county surveyor by the board of supervisors to fill the vacancy created by J Kempe Richardson. Richardson resigned August 16 citing inadequate pay. the combined salary for surveyor and roads surveyor is 5675 annually. McGuire is expected to assume duties immediately, with Richardson’s resignation effective September 22 and vacation beginning today.

Plans Complete For Saturday Shrine Event In Ukiah Parade

More than a dozen Rahmes Temple units totaling 400 Shriners in colorfully uniforms plus candidates will parade Saturday afternoon at 1 30 from the Veterans building to the 12th District Fairgrounds for a Shrine ceremony at 3. The Rahmes Temple Band 65 strong will lead parade music and a Purdy Hall concert. Oriental Bands from Santa Rosa and Napa will add color and rhythm. The Patrol 45 members and the Chanters 30 strong will parade and perform in Purdy Hall with Santa Rosa Riffs 30 strong.
