Sponge slips from submarine claw at atomic waste site off San Francisco

Oceanographer Robert Dyer of the EPA described a failed attempt to haul a four-foot sponge from a 3,000-foot level among 55-gallon drums of nuclear waste near the Farallon Islands. The sponge slipped as waves rose, amid sharks and rough seas, after fragments were recovered for study.

Mendelsohn nomination eyed by Senate panel

A Senate committee appears poised to decide this week on Robert Mendelsohn’s nomination as assistant secretary of interior for policy budget and administration. San Francisco dispatch reports Pan American World Airways flew a special performance version of the Boeing 747 around the Earth via the North and South Poles in 48 hours and 3 minutes. The polar speed flight celebrated Pan Am's 50th birthday and the Golden Anniversary of U.S. international aviation, cutting nearly a day from the 1965 Boeing 707 record.
