Voters Kill Carlson Annexation in City Vote

Voters in Fort Bragg rejected developer Alan Carlson’s plan to annex 51 acres on Todds Point by 584 to 438 in a single issue special election. City Clerk Bill Rexrode said annexation fees remained 57 to 43 percent against after counts. council plans to meet to formalize the dead measure.

Street vendors barred as Mendocino approves new ordinance

Mendocino Supervisors adopt a street vending ban on public streets and sidewalks effective Thanksgiving. The vote was unanimous with no vendor input. A revised version allows free literature distribution to preserve constitutionality.

Northwestern California remains mostly fair through Thursday with coastal fog at night and morning and occasional cloudiness to the north. Fort Bragg reports 48 low and 68 high, Ukiah 52 low and 77 high.

Shuttle Enterprise makes final free flight landing at Edwards

The space shuttle Enterprise completed its last free flight dropping from its jumbo jet mothership at Edwards Air Force Base. Prince Charles greeted the landing as the orbiter touched down on a concrete runway after a 17 600 foot drop in under two minutes.

Drummond Named Mendocino County Counsel

John A. Drummond age 33 named first county counsel by Mendocino board of supervisors. The Lake deputy county counsel will start Jan 1978 with a 25090 salary and authority to hire two deputies. Board members, including Ernie Banker, approved the appointment in a public vote amid private interviews with over two dozen applicants. Drummond, Loyola Law School 1970 graduate, was previously in Los Angeles county counsel and moved to Lake County for smog allergy concerns. He was nicknamed Bulldog by a supervisor.

Negotiations to continue Center talks at Ukiah district vote

Ukiah Unified board, in a 4 to 3 vote, kept alive negotiations with the Yokayo Cultural Recreation Center committee for a possible 40 year lease of Yokayo school land. Critics urged caution on tying up district property while supporters argued a center could co exist with Mendocino College and serve local arts and meeting needs. The discussion also touched on better input from the community and possible in town versus college site preferences. The board also reviewed efforts to ensure handicapped students receive support, including addressing Dyslexia with potential federal and state funding.

Houdini the bat outsmarts teachers in Tulsa classroom

Houdini a bat nicknamed for escape artistry escaped twice from a bird cage in biology class at Washington High School in Tulsa. After a third escape amid fears of rabies the bat was placed in two sacks and refrigerated for health checks but the bag was found empty. Houdini was later found alive, euthanized, and tested negative for rabies.
