USC trusted by coaches to hold top spot after a 23-6 win over Washington. UCLA surges to No 2 with a 21-16 victory over Stanford, while Colorado rises to No 3 with a 21-16 win over Nebraska.
Stanford coach John Ralston touted a rising Pacific Eight tradition after praising conference action and a string of notable wins including USC over Notre Dame UCLA over Tennessee and Oregon State over Purdue. Cal and others faced mixed results as Cal lost to Syracuse while San Jose State praised its ground game in a 52 14 victory over New Mexico.
In Mexico City the United States trails Russia by a wide margin as gold medals are awarded in skeet shooting fencing and diving. Ed Brown Dan Voorhees III lead skeet after round one while Jim Henry Sué Gossick and Ann Peterson represent the U S in diving. Keith Russell paces three American divers with a second place in Sunday’s three meters. Odds favor Russia as swimming medals are anticipated before the wrap of play on Oct 29.
The United Press International ratings list top college football teams with first place votes and records in parentheses. Southern Cal leads at 6-0 with 32 first place votes, UCLA is 6-0, Colorado 5-0, Tennessee 3-1, North Carolina State 6-0, Georgia 4-1, Purdue 4-1, Wyoming 6-0, Houston 4-1, and Notre Dame 3-2.
Jose Luis Pimentel, 12-1-2, from Jalisco Mexico, knocked Ray Coleman down four times and stopped him in the sixth round of a scheduled 10. Coleman briefly felled Pimentel in the first round, but Pimentel recovered to win his 15th fight with two draws, no losses. In Stockton Rollie Penaroya, 12-1, halted Memo Guerrero in 1:53 of the second round with a series of rights, the referee stopping the bout as Guerrero stood dazed.
Floyd Patterson, 32, says he feels good and expects to beat Jerry Quarry in a 12 round bout at the Olympic Auditorium. The winner likely faces Thad Spencer in the next round of the World Boxing Association tournament to crown a new champion after Cassius Clay.
Cleveland Municipal Stadium, capacity 73 811, is described as the biggest baseball stadium.
San Francisco 49ers expect most injured players to return for Sundays game against Detroit at Kezar Stadium after Sunday’s setback against New Orleans. Coach Jack Christiansen confirmed star receivers Willard Parks Miller and others will likely play, though Krueger faces a doubtful start with a sprained knee.
The San Francisco Warriors visit the Oakland Arena for the first of 18 shows this season as Cincinnati comes in. Oakland Oaks drew 4,800 for their ABA opener while the Grand National shifts to the Cow Palace. The Warriors and Cincinnati mix in a tight early schedule with Rodgers trade talks and Robertson key win chances.
Connie Hawkins scored 34 points as Pittsburgh beat New Jersey 110 107 in a return to pro action. Art Heyman added 25 points after a disputed call triggered a technical on New Jersey’s Dan Anderson, who led all scorers with 41.
