Dean Recollections Clash With Nixon Tapes in Watergate Case

Former White House counsel John W. Dean III testified that three February and March 1973 tapes with Richard Nixon do not match his memory of the meetings. He noted missing items on the Feb. 27 tape and implied the tapes may not reflect his full recollection, while the judge allowed the jury to hear the tapes and decide their accuracy.

Ex-mayor H. Runkel dies at 81 in Ukiah convalescent home

Former Ukiah mayor Herman George Runkel died after a long illness at 81 in a Ukiah convalescent home. A World War I veteran, he founded Runkel Roofing Company and served 12 years on the city council including two terms as mayor. He leaves his wife, a daughter Roberta Jensen, four sisters, a brother, a grandson and three great grandchildren. Funeral Friday at 2 at Eversole Mortuary with burial in Ukiah Cemetery.

Project SEARCH aims to boost reading skills districtwide

The Ukiah Unified board discussed Project SEARCH to define basic reading skills and individual weaknesses for K-12 students. Teachers will record specific recommendations per child to guide progress through grades, then apply similar skills to math and other subjects. Clocks revert to standard time Sunday. schools and buses return to usual hours Tuesday after a Monday in-service for teachers.

Heavier taxes on wealthy proposed by Democrats

Democrats in Washington launched a sharp critique of Ford's economic program arguing it harms the poor and middle class while aiding the rich. Senator Muskie urged higher taxes on wealthy individuals and corporations and proposed price restraint measures, including possible gasoline rationing and wage price controls as a last resort.

Supervisors Debate Meeting Dates Before Holidays
