United Press International reports Chico State fell 26-20 to Cal State Hayward, ending a five game non conference run as Chico slips to 0-1 in the Far Western Conference. Humboldt Sac State and Cal State Hayward lead the league at 2-0 after shared weekend victories. Humboldt won 30-14 over San Francisco State as Jeff Getty returned an interception for a score and Dan Walsh added two rushing TDs. Sac State routed Nevada as Mike Lippi threw four TD passes, a school record, while Bud Journey fueled Cal Poly Pomona for a 45-13 loss.

Ukiah part time golfer Lee Conroy earned a Pro Am spot at the San Francisco Open by winning a company sales contest. He will team with pro Lee Elder and two amateurs at Meadows in Marin County, with West Coast Life underwriting the outing. Conroy, a longtime underwriter with West Coast Life, paddles his hobby into a big city event after years of casual play in Ukiah Oregon-born, he relocated to Ukiah in 1950.

Bengals rookie Greg Cook dies in Ohio crash

In Carroll County Ohio on U S 23 near Carlesville a fatal two car collision killed Barton Cook 42 and Bengals rookie quarterback Greg Cook 22. Highways Patrol said Barton drove south in the northbound lane and collided head on with the Bengals passer who died on scene. Greg Cook was a UC graduate in his rookie season.

Los Angeles reports Bill Toomey, the 90 year old competitor, aiming for a world record at UCLA during a two day event. He spoke of not completing the efforts needed and falling eight and a half points short of the mark after a strong showing in early rounds.
