City planners approve Main St extension EIR with little debate

The planning commission backed the draft environmental impact report for the Main Street extension, finding it adequate with minimal discussion and no audience comment. Final project approval rests with the city council which also handles routes and noise concerns from Ukiah General Hospital chiller units.

German teen dies in Point Arena head on crash

A 19 year old West German, Klaus Borkowski, died after his van collided head on with a southbound flatbed truck north of Point Arena. His 14 year old brother Hartmuth was injured seriously and taken to Mendocino Coast Hospital. The crash happened at 4 p.m. on a curve near Lighthouse Road. Glen Gabriel of Santa Rosa, driver of the truck, was uninjured. The brothers were visiting from West Germany and have an uncle in Sunnyvale.

California High Court to rule on mandatory death penalty

Sacramento reports the state Supreme Court opens heavy oral arguments in the Stevent Rockwell case. The court considers whether California's mandatory death penalty law aligns with U.S. Supreme Court guidelines after the July ruling. Rockwell, 25, was convicted of kidnapping, rape, and murder of Linda Beth Coverly of Van Nuys. Bolivian Boeing 707 Crash Leaves 100 Dead in Citywide Devastation

In Santa Cruz, Bolivia, a Jet Power Inc. owned Boeing 707 leased to Lloyd Bolivian Airlines crashed during takeoff, slashing a major street. About 100 people, mostly poor residents including children, burned or torn apart by flaming fuel as the plane exploded on a soccer field. The three American crew members perished. cargo from Houston had been destined elsewhere. Rescue efforts continue as authorities inspect wreckage and morgues fill.

Countys Special Districts Face Insurance Strain

Supervisor Burgess Williams opened talks on county policy options to ease insurance costs for special districts. The board asked County Administrator Al Beltrami to consult with the county carrier on bringing districts under the county plan or forming a pooled rate. Letters urging fire districts to work with their association and seek worker’s comp coverage were to be sent, with clerical help limited to organizing a meeting.
