Ukiah fans expect a victory as the Wildcats host Fort Bragg with a fired up lineup and improving defense. The article notes Ukiah’s tougher schedule, strong backfield and linemen, and urges players to translate practice into a 48 minute effort for a first win this season.
The Redwood Empire Association hosts its annual convention golf tournament at Hoberg Forest Lake Fairways running today through Sunday. Northern California sections are set to be represented with Gus Poulos as chairman and Bandleader Sal Carson acting as official starter. About 400 players are expected to attend.
Albert Oas 92 a founder of the National Ski Association died Monday night in Munising Michigan. Funeral services are planned today. In other dispatches a market note reports Southeastern Asian countries supply about 30 percent of the United States rubber imports.
In the Thursday night 9 p.m. bowling league at Redwood Valley Shopping Center, leaders Redwood Valley and Park Motel and Rocky's Pizza sit near the top with 10-2 and 9-3 records respectively. Betty Markus of Farmers Insurance rolled a 212 to lead individual scores, with Flora Moschetti and Lou's notables posting strong 192s and three players hitting 170s. Several bowlers improved their averages as the season opened, including Leola McCaa and Norma Friend, while Frances others showed gains in series and high games across multiple teams.
In the AHL curtain-raiser the Cleveland Barons and Hershey Bears fought to a 1-1 tie in fog shrouded Hershey. Sixteen penalties in the rough third period included five matching majors for fighting as veteran Dunc Fisher netted a late goal to salvage a Bears draw. In Quebec, Providence Reds topped the Quebec Aces 4-3 behind goals from Larry Hillman and Dutch Reibel.
James Bradford of Washington D C finished second in the heavyweight division at the world weight lifting championships in Warsaw. Jurij Vlasov of Russia won with a total of 1093 and a half pounds, edging Bradford by 44 and a half pounds. David Ashman of Santa Monica placed sixth with 957 pounds.
Green Bay reports fullback Jim Taylor will miss the upcoming game with the San Francisco Forty-Niners after being hospitalized Wednesday for second degree burns from hot grease splashing on his right hand and foot at home.
Al Smith and manager Al Lopez back Early Wynn as the White Sox face the Dodgers at Comiskey Park in a must win World Series game. Wynn, 39, with 271 career victories, is criticized by some for age yet known for grit and his pay impact with each opponent run.
Rudell Stitch, a Louisville church deacon, outboxed Ralph Dupas over 10 rounds to win a unanimous decision on national TV. Stitch attacked Dupas with a sharp left and jolting rights, moving ahead early and scoring repeatedly to control the bout.
Baseball figure Billy Martin, 31, wed Gretchen Ann Winkler, 24, in a two minute Desert Inn ceremony. The Cleveland Indians second baseman and Winkler, from Alliance Nebraska, plan a two week Italian honeymoon.
Montreal Canadiens led by Maurice Richard begin a bid for a third straight NHL pennant as they host the Boston Bruins. The team brings back stars Dickie Moore Jean Beliveau Bernie Geoffrion and Henri Richard after a record fourth straight Cup. Chicago Black Hawks beat New York Rangers 5 2 in season debut with Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita scoring.
Ukiah frosh sophs, rested after a two week layoff, host Fort Bragg at Anton Stadium at 6 pm hoping to upset the Fort Bragg Jayvees who beat Willits 32-0 and barely won 7-6 at Lakeport. Led by Dennis Maxwell the Ukiah attack seeks timing and big plays while the defense eyes Fort Bragg’s machine.
Washington Redskins held a one hour scrimmage marked by a fist fight between Jim Podoley and Art Gob and a near brawl involving Ben Scotti and Joe Walton. Coach Mike Nixon said the incidents did not disturb him as players shook hands after the session.
The Ukiah Men’s Golf Club travels to Cobb Mountain for a decisive match in a three team series with Healdsburg and Cobb Mountain. Players are urged to arrive early for warmups and transportation help is available from Bob Whitaker at the High Mountain course.
