The county planning commission, after over five hours of discussion, will await reports from the Bureau of Land Management and state Division of Oil and Gas before deciding on exploration and development requirements for geothermal steam in the southeast county. The panel debated EIR scope, boundary definitions, and whether early exploration needs only a negative declaration while wells would trigger full EIRs. Sun Oil Co. plans two exploratory wells in the known or believed steam zone and would seek a use permit if they drill successfully. state and federal reports are due in 4-6 months with further hearings to follow.
