County planners denied without prejudice a zone change for Charles Huffman to let a drive-in restaurant be built on East Road Redwood Valley citing strong neighbor opposition and pending land use policy study by a citizens advisory committee. Opponents warned of traffic noise and safety concerns while supporters cited lack of local hamburger options and Grange hall support. Huffman may re apply. appeal to board of supervisors possible. Other permits approved include a motel expansion in Hopland a mobile home park south of Laytonville and a Fort Bragg service station modification to sell pre packaged foods.

L P Worker Crushed In Ukiah Mill Auger Accident
Cecil Jeffries a 43 year old L P maintenance man is in serious condition at Ukiah General Hospital after his left leg and arm were severely injured when his trousers cuff grabbed an auger during a repair. Rescue teams, including Ukiah Ambulance and Fire Department, aided a lengthy rescue and surgery. Dr William Fisher amputated the mangled leg to free him and Jeffries was later transported for continued surgery.

Public Utilities Commission granted Blue Bus Lines of Willits a permit for expanded non public bus service for the handicapped elderly and disabled. Hal and Jean Tibbetts seek state and federal funds to buy three vans to start regular trips including school runs convalescent hospital visits and five mile radius routes with a Willits to Ukiah one way fare of 90 cents. The service will operate 7 15 a m from Willits and 4 30 p m from Ukiah using a 12 seat bus once funded.
