Unification Vote Nears For Ukiah Hopland Districts

Voters across Ukiah Union and Hopland high school districts go to 13 polling places from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday to decide if the districts should unify into one administration by July 1, 1965. The measure faces debate over local control and potential efficiency gains as the master plan for Mendocino County proceeds.

Polling hours run 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. tomorrow at designated sites by precinct to decide if the Ukiah and Hopland districts unify. Decoration Contest Opens Today in Ukiah Area

Barringer Killed in 101 Crash

Funeral services were held for Willam H E Barringer 28 of Ukiah at Eversole mortuary with Rev. Frank McCray officiating. Inurnment followed at Chapel of the Chimes Santa Rosa. Barringer died when his car skidded and broadsided another on Highway 101 near Lytton Road. Injured were Ann B Sedlacek 53 Emil Sedlacek 63 Myrtle Demton 82 all from Arcata and Ashland Ore. Survivors include parents two brothers and a son. Contributions suggested to Ukiah Valley Association for Retarded Children.

Locomotive Gone Wild in Saigon Station

A driverless locomotive ran wild at Saigon's main railway station in what officials called an act of sabotage. Casualties ranged from seven to nine dead and about 13 injured, with American and Vietnamese officials offering conflicting estimates. A military source described the scene as catastrophic, saying victims were ground to hamburger and hard to identify.

Two Escapees Recaptured Near Fort Bragg

Fort Bragg police arrested Jerry Brierton a 30 year old suspected car thief and John Wallack 40 a forger as they walked through a residential area in prison garb after escaping Sunday night from the Parlin Forks honor farm. Norris Murphy 37 from Los Angeles stole clothes from a storeroom before leaving and separated from the pair during the escape.

Mariner 4 Locks Onto Canopus in Mars Mission

UPI reports Mariner-4, en route to Mars, locked onto the star Canopus with its electronic eye early today, stopping its roll in space. The 575-pound craft at 2:57 a.m. PST confirmed the alignment, enabling a planned mid course correction to tighten the flight path within 8,000 miles of Mars for July rendezvous and 22 camera shots of terrain and canals.
