The Valley Sports and Recreators Club invites residents to join for weekly meetings starting Dec 7 and discuss plans for football and basketball activities. Members help organize boosters sections and support youth sports while electing the next Board of Governors.
A mixed roster update lists players including Cogdill from Washington State and McKeever, Gonsalves, and Williams from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. It references UCLA, USC, Oregon, Washington, Cal Poly, Fresno State, and Arizona State among others in a broad lineup note.
A late tip-in by Sevensfoot and a game clinching basket near the end helped the Warriors beat the Knicks 196-125 in a high scoring clash. Knick star Wille Naylls contributed 30 points as Boston pulled ahead by two games in the Eastern Division with a 109-93 win over the Lakers.
Willits high school will host a two day invitational basketball tournament featuring Ukiah Napa and South Fork. The event opens Saturday at 11 a.m. with Willits vs Ukiah and Napa vs South Fork at 1 p.m. Consolation play follows at 7:30 p.m. and the championship around 9 p.m. Notable teams Napa and Ukiah are strong challengers though Ukiah is emerging as a dark horse from a barrier before Healdsburg tourney.
In Houston on Wednesday southpaw Dave Charnley challenges Joe Brown for the lightweight crown with Brown defending at 33. In Logan on Friday Gene Fullmer defends the NBA middleweight title against Spider Webb, with both fights televised nationally and possible undisputed outcomes for Sugar Ray Robinson's status.
Navy weighs a perfect season versus a Liberty Bowl invitation to face Penn State as Liberty officials seek an opponent. The Sugar and Rose Bowls filled. Alabama and Kentucky declined the Bluegrass Bowl. Navy's decision rests with Admiral Melson after an athletic board review while other bowls finalize lineups.
San Francisco, led by Brodie filling in for Tittle, scored three quick touchdowns to beat Cleveland 21 20. Key plays came from Krueger Tubbs and Woodson as the defense harassed Milt Plum. Davis averaged 45 yards on eight punts as San Francisco eyes a divisional title.
About 70 boats raced the Salton Sea in the final day of the first Inboard Championship. Chuck Lyford of Seattle won the 48 cubic inch hydroplane class at 65.55 mph. Allan Ford set an early top time of 105.34 mph in the 225 cubic inch class. An explosion during the big boat race injured Art Kastner who was treated at Casitas Hospital in Indio.
The Monday night league features Bob Guidi top individual with 235 as The Rendezvous, Daniels Harlowe, Steel Mill Supply and Foggy's Liquors chase the early lead. Fleeting gaps appear among Farmer's Insurance Grieb Trucking Commercial Body Shop Montgomery Ward with several 600s and high games.
In Las Vegas the first Grand Prix stock car race ran 131 miles before darkness halted the event. Elmhurst speedster Fred Lorenzen won, earning 1600 dollars. Harold Smith of Dayton led early but a 45 second pit stop by Lorenzen and Mike Klapak of Warren, Ohio, behind him in a 1959 Ford influenced final standings.
