Agriculture department will not ban bacon over nitrite plan

Assistant Agriculture Secretary Carol Foreman says the current move to limit nitrite in curing meats will not become a bacon ban. Separately, the Coast Guard fought to contain a crude oil spill of 1300 to 1600 gallons from a Mobil pipeline that reached Dominguez Channel near Los Angeles Harbor.

Sadat bids invitees to Cairo for Geneva peace talks

President Anwar Sadat announced in Cairo that all parties to the Middle East conflict including Israel will be invited to discuss preparations for reconvening the Geneva peace conference. He said talks could begin as early as next Saturday and indicated invitations may extend to the PLO and independent Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza.

Ukiahi Wildcats Band Runs Miles for Fiesta Bowl Trip

Ukiahi High School band members and boosters organized a 100 mile run to fund a trip to the Fiesta Bowl in Phoenix on December 17. About 70 students participated as darkness fell with six and a half miles still to go. Runners from six to twelve miles were joined by pledges. 3 year old Ahna Clark and wrestler Henry Kuintzle among those who added miles.
