Olympic Games Open With Record Gold Rush in Melbourne

The opening day saw nations brim with new marks as Vladimir Kuts led Russia to its first track win with a 28 45.6 record in the 10 000 meters, Olga Fikotova of Czechoslovakia set a discus mark, Vinci lifted three Olympic records in bantamweight, and Dumas cleared seven feet in high jump. The U S dominated sprinting and rowing, with John Culbreath, Glenn Davis, Eddie Southern and others posting strong qualifying times while Yale’s eight suffered a stunning defeat to Australia.
