Holiday death toll stands at 51
The Thanksgiving holiday period saw 51 highway deaths on day one of the four day weekend. The National Safety Council projected up to 725 fatalities could occur if current trends continue, with 42 deaths reported by 10 a.m. EST and breakdowns showing 42 traffic, 8 fires, and 1 other. The council noted deaths double for every 10 mph over 50 but could not estimate the impact of a 50 mph speed limit due to insufficient data.
