Arab militants attacked a Beit Shean three story building early today. Israeli commandos stormed the house killing four guerrillas. Four Israelis, three men and a woman, died and 22 others, mainly children, were hospitalized after jumping from windows.\
A proposed seismic safety element for Mendocino County General Plan urges restricting land use in hazard zones to reduce tsunami and earthquake damage. The plan divides the county into four hazard zones and two geological areas, calling for open space development near faults and extensive geological studies. Public hearings precede adoption with possible revisions returning to planners.
Emperor Hirohito welcomed President Ford at the Imperial Palace marking a symbolic end to wartime tensions and promising a 1975 visit to the United States. Ford pressed energy and arms talks while omitting a nuclear weapons discussion with Tokyo's mayor.
Malcolm King president of the North Coast Grape Growers Association categorically denied plans to build a $25 million winery in Sonoma County next year. King noted no Mendocino grapes rot and most small growers sold at Association prices amid high quality fruit this fall.
A Philippine gunman released ambassador Eduardo Romualdero and a second man after threatening the embassy for over 10 hours. He obtained a promise that his 15 year old son would fly from Manila to the United States, with a Philippine Airlines jet due to land in San Francisco by 6 p.m. PST. The FBI arrested Napoleon Lechoco, a Maryland based law clerk, as Manila described his past as a fled former presidential aide avoided a 1958 fraud charge. No injuries were reported.
