Four youths including Arvy Whitney Kenneth Shrum Dennis Davis and Gary Lane accuse Baugn of threats and shooting after he repossessed Whitney s house trailer for delinquent payments. The defendants plead not guilty with Merle P Orchard deputy district attorney present representing the people.
Glenn Thornton, 32, faces manslaughter charges over the November 3 highway death of Elmer French, 42, a Willits lumber worker. The fatal crash occurred five miles south of Willits when Thornton’s logging truck collided head on with the northbound car driven by French’s wife. Judge W S Van Dyke will hear the case this afternoon at four.
Anna Jene Pearce, daughter of Mr and Mrs B G Pearce, suffered a fall on a slippery street this morning while going to work. She escaped serious injury. X rays at Ukiah General Hospital showed no fractures, but she has bruises on both knees and must remain at home in bed for a few days.
Noel Field and his German-born wife Herta Field have been released by Hungarian authorities, according to Budapest Radio. The U S Legation confirmed contact and said they know where the Fields are staying. The case, tied to Cold War espionage intrigue, remains opaque with further details undisclosed.
Northwestern California mostly fair today with partly cloudy northern areas. Clouding Thursday brings light rain north of Garberville. Local morning fog in coastal valleys. Colorado Springs officials dismissed California Rep. Clair Engle’s remarks about a water problem for the Air Force Academy north of the city. They cited current and projected water availability, noting city could support 3 to 4 more similar academies by 1958 and that underground wells add to reserves.
The 7958-ton freighter PL & TT Trader, 468 feet long with 48 crew, was about 60 miles west-northwest of Cape Flattery Washington when a hull crack opened on the main deck amid heavy seas. Death is believed due to a blood clot after a recent accident.
West Point graduate class of 1940 Graf succeeds Colonel A J Goodpaster who left for Pentagon liaison duties and White House staff secretary. Graf served with the 7th Engineer Combat Battalion at Fort Knox for a year then with the 35th Engineer Combat Regiment.
French Premier Pierre Mendes-France arrives in Washington for a four day goodwill visit. He seeks American backing for finances of Indochina forces and talks with Eisenhower Dulles and others on Western alliances and Africa. He defends his stance toward Russia and European security.
In a late flash, Lou Boudreau, ex Cleveland Indian and Boston Red Sox manager, was announced as manager of the New Kansas City Athletics. A shallow earthquake near El Centro rattled residents at 3 56 a.m. but caused no damage. San Jose State College declared itself a top independence football power and entered bowl bid talks for the Gator Bowl. A 16 year old confessed to planting a dynamite cap booby trap at Alexander Hamilton High School, causing minor injuries.
Senators from both parties described divides over a compromise on censure for Joseph McCarthy. Senator Watkins urged a new censure charge, while Monroney and Thye voiced dimmed prospects for any deal. Some support rumored compromise language, others oppose, as the Senate debated the two count censure proposal.
President Eisenhower announced a three member emergency board to investigate a threatened strike by the AFL Machinists Union against Capital, National, Northwest, Trans World, United and Eastern airlines.
