Public meeting on county open space plan in Ukiah

Delays cited as clinic gets two year permit extension

Ukiah area doctors William Waring and Sidney Maurer win a two year extension on their use permit for two mobile homes in Calpella toward a permanent Pomo Clinic. Land purchase delays and bid process pushed construction to start next spring, with completion aimed by Christmas 1974 despite criticism from Chair Barney Rowland.

Ukiah Tops United Way Campaign Again in 1960s Region

Ukiah led six campaign areas in the United Way for North Bay, reaching 112 percent of its $30,500 goal with $34,265 and likely near $35,000 after year end. Healdsburg, Santa Rosa, and western Sonoma followed, while Sonoma area missed its goal. Overall six-area total hit $578,472 or 106.9 percent of $541,250. Funds benefit Mendocino County groups including Big Brothers, Boy Scouts, Campfire Girls, Children’s Home, Red Cross, Salvation Army, senior center, and Ukiah Valley Association for the Retarded.

Kennedy Jr. to have leg amputated after bone cancer diagnosis

Edward M. Kennedy Jr., 12, son of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, has bone cancer in his right leg and will undergo surgery at Georgetown University Hospital on Saturday to remove the leg above the knee. The growth is described as bone cancer by Kennedy's press secretary.

Tragic Stratford fire in Los Angeles kills 24, injures 49

A blaze raged through the Stratford apartments at 1735 W. 6th Street killing 24 and injuring 49 as residents fled upstairs. Fire officials cited an open stairway acting as a chimney, note noncompliance with a city ordinance, and a building housing about 150, many of them Mexican Americans and children.

Governor urges session on state energy crisis

Sacramento Senator Randolph Collier urged Governor Reagan to call a special legislative session to examine the energy shortage and consider emergency legislation. He warned of unemployment school shutdowns and business failures if rationing occurs and urged action to forestall panic and ensure hearings reveal the crisis scope. He cited trucking industry fuel allocations down 10 the prior year and called for possible higher gasoline taxes as an alternative to rationing.

County planners split on Laws Avenue store

County planning commission split on a Circle K convenience store on Laws Avenue south of Ukiah. The 4-2 vote approved the use permit for 20 years, moving the building, with owners and staff backing drainage, signs and improvements, while two commissioners urged residential zoning or questioned the need given nearby groceries.

Ukiah GOP Women Host Old Fashioned Basket Social

Ukiah Area Republican Women stage an Old Fashioned Basket Social at the Home Arts building Fairgrounds to raise funds for Meals on Wheels. The event runs 6 p.m. cocktails, 7 30 p.m. basket suppers, 9 p.m. 1 a.m. dancing with Barbara Curtis Quintet and prizes for baskets and costumes. Tickets 5 per couple 2 50 single with proceeds to buy a food steamer and utensils for meals delivery to shut ins.
