New coal contract debated by United Mine Workers council
The UMW bargaining council resumed consideration of a three year coal contract calling it a good contract while a mine owners spokesman warned it could raise electricity and auto prices. The 38 member council may vote today on recommending passage to 120,000 striking miners as Arnold Miller noted 19 items remained. The pact calls for wage increases of 9 percent the first year and 3 percent in each subsequent year plus cost adjustments.

Miners Reach New Contract Terms Amid Strike Outcomes

PUC orders water system upgrade for Las Brisas area
The Public Utilities Commission ordered upgrades to the McChesney Water Company system serving Las Brisas in Redwood Valley after a 1973 complaint. China Names Chiao Kuan-hua New Foreign Minister
Chiao Kuan-hua, a Chou En-lai confidant and architect of U S rapprochement, became China's foreign minister in a routine reshuffle effective today, replacing Chi Peng-fei. The 66 year old diplomat heads Beijing's diplomatic corps as Kissinger plans four days of talks.
