A savage midsection storm raged across the United States from the Great Lakes to Texas with blizzard snows tornadoes and high winds. At least seven people died and many were injured as roads closed airports shut and power lines felled. A Nebraska mother of six died electrocuted on a snow damaged line in Fairbury. Three women held in double slaying
In Stockton California three young women with Manson family scars and three ex cons with Aryan Brotherhood tattoos were charged with killing ex Marine James Willett and his wife Lauren to silence their talk of a crime spree. Police found Willett’s headless body in a shallow grave near Guerneville. Lauren Willett’s body lay in a basement house where the suspects were arrested.

Lakeport approves funds for public swimming pool project
Lake County supervisors awarded a 68600 contract to BLP Jeffers of Lakeport for a public swimming facility. The bid exceeded the estimate by 9600 but was the lowest. Funds will be transferred from the building fund and repaid next year when the park district begins taxing. The panel praised the advisory committee and expects construction to start before winter attracting swimmers away from the lake and boosting county recreation.

Back-up school finance bill gains Senate floor support
A $350 million back-up school finance bill cleared the Senate Finance committee on a 9-2 vote. Sen. Albert S. Rodda of Sacramento pushed a straight school finance plan to aid poverty-stricken districts if major tax-shift measures fail. Rodda noted it wasn’t a major advance yet aimed to position California for Serrano decision compliance.
