Soviet backed MPLA troops repelled a mortar supported attack across the Bongo River near Quifangordo twelve miles north of Luanda as rival units pressed from the north and south threatening to besiege the city.

Ford to visit Peking at month end amid detente talks
Washington reports that the United States and China have settled dates for President Ford to travel to Peking at the end of the month. Kissinger and Chinese Foreign Minister Chai Kuan Hua exchanged messages to fix timing and jointly announce the visit. The four day trip may include stops in Indonesia and the Philippines, with Mao Tse tung to greet Ford in Beijing. Nixon also visited China in 1972.
