Ore carrier Fitzgerald sinks in fierce Lake Superior storm

The 729 foot ore carrier Edmund Fitzgerald with 28 to 35 crew sank during a severe storm on Lake Superior. Coast Guard ships found debris and an oil slick with no confirmed survivors. Winds up to 80 mph and 25 foot waves were reported as searchers scoured the area at dawn.

Block Parent program aims to aid Ukiah youths

A Ukiah effort to start a local Block Parent program grows from a case of a sixth grader bullying Carl to a community plan. Duane Mahan leads the effort with Ukiah police and Mendocino County sheriff support. meetings at Yokayo and other schools aim to recruit Block Parents to help with emergencies, guidance, and potential testimony in abuse cases.
