Planning panel wrestles with dense housing in city zones

Planning commissioners debated how dense new residential zones should be as they opened public hearings on a proposed zoning ordinance. The draft would cut densities in R-2 from 29 to 14 and in R-3 from 43 to 18 units per acre, with talks of an R-4 option and a possible A-4 zone.

Highway 101 to gain four lanes Willits to Ukiah

Caltrans Eureka planner Bob Brown says studies moving a project in the vicinity of seven million dollars to widen Highway 101 from two lanes north of Highway 20 to Willits into four lanes within four to five years. Plans for a bypass around Willits exist but funding is years away.

California 12th graders show reading and math declines in annual tests

California Department of Education reports 12th grade scores fall across reading writing arithmetic and spelling from the previous year dropping to 41st percentile in reading and 33rd in writing while 6th grade results improve in some subjects. Second and third graders post gains and remain above national averages.

Veterans to honor dead at Ukiah Cemetery ceremony

Ukiah veterans groups will pay tribute to all dead comrades at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Ukiah Cemetery on Low Gap Road. Pete Sozzoni says no full dress ceremony, flags only at American Legion and VFW monuments. Charley Harper will visit with officers. Julius Schindler will offer the prayer.

Supervisors Tap Funds to Back Jail and Courthouse Projects

County supervisors redirect capital funds to back plans for a new jail on Low Gap Road while preparing for possible federal construction grants. Final jail plan costs run 60 000 to 90 000 with 34 000 already set aside, leaving a gap. They also shifted 28 000 from the Social Services building fund to cover a higher courthouse annex bid of 205 500 from Festmeier Construction. 191 300 of that will be covered by EDA funds. Construction for the Boonville yard bid at 87 350 from Nic-Con Structures will be funded by EDA funds, with later additions by the public works staff. Building No 2 costs listed at 40 000 for a planning and building department move next year.

Safety concerns stall 32 unit apartment project on Leslie Street

Neighbor Joe Barbara with six fuel tanks and a Mobil plant on Leslie Street urged the planning commission to block the 32 unit complex citing day and night truck traffic and fuel storage near potential children. Commissioners rejected the use permit 3 to 2, citing design issues. developer Tim Allred said he will appeal to the city council and resubmit with changes at the December meeting.
