Leonard Layton, 26, a California Highway Patrol officer from Los Banos, died when his patrol car careened on Ridgewood Grade north of Ukiah, left four lanes, struck an embankment, and tumbled down hillside. Two other Ukiah residents were injured in a separate southbound collision on Highway 101 near Hensley Creek.

Hellman Hopland Association president and Rolland Hurt Covelo director. An 8‑person potluck supper sponsored by the Ukiah Chamber of Commerce followed. Lou Ricci of Santa Rosa was auctioneer and Dario Marioni inspected stock.
