Quiet anniversary marks 54 years of Soviet Communism

In Moscow, snow-covered Red Square observed 54 years of Communist rule with no new weapons and a mild military display. Defense Minister Grechko avoided inflammatory language, while the SS9 ICBM remained the showpiece. Brezhnev Kosygin and Podgorny led the Politburo atop the Lenin Mausoleum as the parade underscored defense will and socialist gains.

Ukiah man charged in drugstore burglaries and arrests

Karl L Hengeveld, 24, of Ukiah, arrested by Ukiah police detectives on two burglary counts and one count of receiving stolen property after a court warrant. He is suspected in burglaries of Medico Drug Store and Angell's Pharmacy on State Street last month. He faces additional counts of possession of dangerous drugs for sale and narcotics paraphernalia, with three juveniles detained for being in a place where narcotics are used. He was booked in city jail. juveniles in Juvenile Hall.

Drug charge jails Ukiah youth after hash pipe found

Gary Lee Williams 21 of Ukiah was booked at city jail on a narcotics paraphernalia charge after a hash pipe used for smoking hashish was found in his possession. He was stopped near Church and Oak Streets by police responding to a prowler report. London UP I Frank Asher 68 was sentenced to eight months in jail for smashing a glass office door. Police Sgt Malcolm Thornton said Asher appeared motivated by a desire to spend Christmas in prison and he has 30 prior convictions.

Gunman kidnaps teen in Contra Costa County

Police search for a 22 year old gunman who dragged 15 year old Debbie DeVore from a Pleasant Hill home after wounding two others. A red Mustang Mach I with out of state plates fled as roadblocks spread across the county.

Jayvee football players injured in auto accident

Three Ukiah Jayvee football players suffered minor injuries after a car rolled off Mill Creek Road early Saturday. Driver Steve Hammond 16, tackle Danny Burton 16, and punter Ron Golden 16 were treated at Hillside Community Hospital. The team vies for the NBL I championship in a final Friday night game at Napa.

California must provide better legal help for indigent prisoners

The Supreme Court ruled California must improve legal assistance for indigent inmates challenging convictions. It affirmed a San Francisco panel’s finding that an exclusive list of prison legal books is inadequate and urged reforms, including access to public defenders or law school programs, with new regulations due by Sept. 1, 1970.

Jobless dads assistance law change announced

Dennis R. Denny, director of the county welfare department, said under State Department of Social Welfare rules that after December 31, 1971 no unemployed father can receive welfare benefits while also receiving or eligible for unemployment insurance. Families relying on unemployed father aid must adjust budgets accordingly to end welfare payments after year’s end.

Two Visitors Nabbed For Tipsy Driving

Patrick Cleaver Shrabel a 54 year old Annapolis resident was arrested by California Highway Patrol on N State Street in Ukiah for drunk driving and driving without a license. Richard J Catlin 45 Loomis was also arrested on N State Street south of Calpella for drunk driving.

UROC votes move to dump Nixon in 1972 primary

The United Republicans of California move to back a dump Nixon campaign for the 1972 presidential primary. Chairman Walter H. Hintzen says they aim to place an uncommitted convention delegate on the ballot. The URC also votes to withdraw from the United Nations and relocate the US headquarters.

Proxmire Withdraws From Democratic Presidential Race

Sen. William Proxmire of Wisconsin withdraws from the Democratic presidential field citing inadequate financial support. He says his criticism of federal spending has offended business and labor and that these groups will not fund his bid. He is 55 and made the weekend statement.

Crash injures two drivers on Highway 1 near Westport

Fort Bragg report says Johny Sneed 68 of Clayton and Carl Eichin 54 of Piercy were injured when Sneed’s pickup collided head on with Eichin’s car on Highway 1 south of Westport. Officers say Sneed attempted to pass a northbound vehicle and both men were taken to Mendocino Coast Hospital for treatment.

Woman bar patron held on suspicion of battery

Zelda Gomez, 30, of Lakeport, is jailed on suspicion of battery after allegedly striking Dolores Smith, also of Lakeport, during an altercation at Elsie's Bar on Highway 29 Saturday night. Deputies report the incident occurred at the Lake County location and Gomez remained in custody today.
