Convicts Escape By Tunneling Under Prison Wall
Ten inmates bored through a 7 inch concrete floor and tunneled 60 feet to escape from the state prison in Walla Walla Washington. The escape occurred between towers 7 and 8 and was discovered at the evening roll call. Authorities pressed a wide manhunt with roadblocks and area searches.

Laytonville Man Acquitted in Runaway Case
A superior court jury acquitted 32 year old William J. Wegner of aiding two 14 year old Laytonville girls to run away. Wegner was arrested at his Laytonville home on September 24 after being charged. The two girls allegedly spent the night with him in a Williams motel and returned to Clear Lake Oaks. The five women and seven men required only about 30 minutes to reach a verdict. The defense was led by Leo Cook with Merle P. Orchard prosecuting and Judge Lilburn Gibson presiding.
