Mendocino County Clerk Jim Broaddus forecast a record 89 percent turnout from 22 041 registered voters with 1 081 absentee ballots cast. Key races include three supervisor districts two judge contests and congressional and assembly races. Local focus on Districts 1 2 3 4 and Ukiah area contests amid nationwide presidential and state races.
Congressmen Clausen arrives at Ukiah airport for a final pre election meeting with committee leaders and his wife Ollie. He plans prop stop appearances in all six counties of the 400 mile district to thank supporters as he travels over 7,500 miles and meets about 18,500 constituents since adjournment. He says his record and plans are clear and leaves reelection to voters.
Republican headquarters on N School Street will provide rides and babysitters for Ukiah voters needing service tomorrow. Cars and drivers are provided through Jordan and Booker car agency. Call 462-4922 for a ride or babysitting.
A 16 month old Pinoleville girl, Julia Denise Phillips, died when the family car left Highway 101 and fell 75 feet into a creek bed six miles north of Laytonville at 2:30 am. Her mother Velma Phillips, 22, and father Disaric Phillips Sr., 36, and brother Duane Jr., 26 months, were injured. Funeral arrangements are pending at Anker Mortuary in Willits. Patrolmen are investigating, with belief the mother may have dozed at the wheel.
At a Santa Rosa Democratic Headquarters rally with about 250 attendees, McCabe condemned a Republican scare campaign named Operation Eagle Eye aimed at voters who recently moved or belong to minority groups. He cited telegrams from President Johnson and Senator Humphrey endorsing McCabe in the First District race.
Northwestern California remains cloudy through Tuesday with rain likely on Tuesday. Forecast includes coastal winds 5 to 15 knots shifting south 15 to 25 knots by Tuesday morning. highs around 60s and lows near 40s to 50s in Napa and Santa Rosa with variable winds and regional variations.
Ukiah’s first Little Theatre offered The Women by Clare Booth Luce with Kathy Hunter directing. An audience of 500 at Carl Purdy hall applauded, laughed, and cheered as Joy Brittingham led Sylvia with strong supporting turns from Rita Jensen, Joan O’Neill, Betty Heap, and Key Arneson.
Government troops traced a Red guerrilla raid that destroyed or damaged 21 U.S. B57 bombers. Up to nine Viet Cong fled. six mortars were found within a mile of Bien Hoa airbase. Four Americans and two Vietnamese died. 31 Americans and five Vietnamese wounded. The attack, termed a little Pearl Harbor, led to a search that yielded negative results after six hours.
A would-be burglar smashed a window at John Wonder Jewelry Store Saturday night, grabbed three watches valued at 279 dollars, and was apprehended by Police Officers Glenn Cordis and Leon Miller two blocks away. Abe F. Lovato, 21, of Ukiah, was booked at the city jail shortly before midnight after fleeing north to Smith and Main and being caught in an empty lot. The watches were recovered.
A compact weather note from the Ukiah Fire Department Weather Observer lists daily high and low temperatures for November 1964 and November 1963. It shows rainfall of 3.01 inches for the latest period and 8.08 inches the previous year.
Washington reports the United States will replace bombers destroyed or damaged in the surprise Communist attack on Bien Hoa Air Base in South Viet Nam. President Johnson ordered additional planes and security measures to safeguard the fleet as officials warned of possible increased Communist activity as the rainy season ends.
Weekend and early today showers pushed Ukiah’s seasonal rainfall close to the year’s total. The Ukiah Fire Department weather bureau reported an unofficial 3.70 inches by noon, up from 2.11 inches at 5 p.m. Thursday. A trace was noted Friday with heavier rain Saturday and Sunday and into early Monday. By yesterday 3.01 inches stood in the gauge.
President Johnson and Senator Goldwater edge toward election day as polls show a Johnson landslide, while Goldwater and GOP headquarters dispute the results. Johnson heads to Texas for speeches and a final NBC TV appearance, Goldwater plans stops in San Francisco and Arizona with a CBS telecast. Nixon links Viet Cong attack to fear of Goldwater, comparing it to Pearl Harbor.
United Press International reports deadly Halloween tricks in at least three states. A 47 year old Long Island mother, Helen Pfeil, admitted assembling hazardous bags containing ant traps, scrub pads, and dog biscuits. Police recovered poison bottle caps marked keep away from children. Pfeil is committed for mental observation. Detroit police seek source of lye filled bubble gum linked to burns in children. Dorothy Wallace says her two kids received the lye treated gum and was the wrapper of a standard bubble gum opened to pour in lye.
California voters faced a tight finale in the U S Senate race with Democrat Pierre Salinger and Republican George Murphy claiming momentum. The state could swing 40 electoral votes as polls showed a near equal split with undecided voters. Murphy criticized Salinger’s ties to the Kennedy Johnson administrations while Salinger defended his record and predicted victory.
