Firefighters from Covelo and nearby districts battled a large blaze in downtown Covelo last night at 6 30 damaging the west end of Gravier s Hardware on Commercial Street and destroying the bakery former bakery Joe Brundage garage Masonic Hall and several residences The losses total about 200 000 with the Masonic Hall valued at 60 000 and other structures from 25 000 to 80 000 Fifteen people were left homeless and electric power was out until 2 30 a m while telephone service resumed by 11 30 p m Fire units from Covelo Laytonville Howard Forest Ukiah and the sheriff s office aided in extinguishing the fire with two crews still mopping up this morning and cause under investigation

Grundy’s Resort Leveled by Fire Near Leggett
A morning fire of unknown origin destroyed Grundy’s Resort bar dining room and restaurant four miles north of Leggett on Highway 101. The blaze at 3 a.m. caused about 80?000 in damage to the building and 30,000 to equipment while a novelty shop and service station nearby were saved. A motorist alerted owner Tom Grundy who notified forestry units from Leggett and Laytonville.
