The Memorial Day weekend saw 466 traffic deaths by 1 p.m. EDT, with total deaths 627 across categories including 466 road, 102 Crown, 4 plane, and 55 other. California led with 62 traffic fatalities, followed by New York 34 and Florida and Ohio with 25 each.
A gunman armed with a rifle opened fire at a Raleigh shopping center during a campaign rally for U S Senator B Everett Jordan. Nine people were wounded and Jordan escaped injury. Police brief a possible motive as the incident disrupts the NC campaign event.
Sunday fire notes include a coffee pot boil dry on Whitmore Lane and an overheated electrical panel at 812 W Church with no damage. Also a grass fire at Orchard and Plum with probable incendiary origin. Saturday records a gasoline spill on a minibike at Laws 209 with minor damage and a street fire on Garrett near Elm. A noise disturbance birds at Rose Avenue is noted.
Fair conditions persist in the south while the north stays cloudy through Tuesday. A chance of showers appears in extreme north today and tonight with cooler inland temperatures. Ukiah reports 90 for a high and 48 for a low tonight.
A Ukiah Daily Journal carrier asks readers to support today by paying in advance. The notice states motor routes are payable three months in advance and requests payment when first contacted.
Sheriff deputies and reserve officers dispersed a large coastal festival near Navarro Ridge Road after residents appealed for traffic and safety controls. About 1,100 to 1,200 attendees dispersed peacefully with no major incidents reported though arrests for alcohol and disorderly conduct occurred among motorcyclists in Lake County nearby.
A no host luncheon honors Fred Weibel owner of the Weibel Winery under construction near Ava Drive. The Mendocino County and Greater Ukiah Chambers of Commerce sponsor the event at the Manor Inn starting at noon. Weibel plans extensive wine making facilities using Mendocino County grapes. At the Kremlin final session President Nixon and Soviet leaders signed a peace pledge and a joint communique while steering away from Vietnam Talks on Vietnam remained unresolved with no timetable for withdrawal or ceasefire details The summit produced agreements on strategic nuclear limits space cooperation and European security but did not settle Vietnam or trade issues Nixon invited Brezhnev to visit the United States with no date set The White House praised the week as a major accomplishment
Judge Broaddus ordered P.S.P. Properties to keep Albion Flats Fishing Village closed until the campgrounds meet county standards. The order follows a temporary restraining order tied to alleged untreated sewage dumping, with county sanitarian Dave Long citing repeated violations. Ukiah attorney Leo Cook argued for operation under conditions, blaming a former operator for the illegal practice.
An 18 year old Redwood Valley youth David Porter forced his family from their Colony Drive home with a loaded shotgun then stood off sheriff's deputies before surrendering. Deputies used three patrol cars as shields and entered after nearly an hour, subduing him without injury. He is held on assault with intent to commit murder charges.
Claude Killen 53 of Ukiah died Friday when his oil delivery truck plunged about 200 feet down an embankment near Lake Pillsbury. He was ejected and the vehicle rolled end over end. Memorial services set for Friday at 1 a.m. at the Ukiah Presbyterian Church.
The Duke of Windsor, former King Edward VIII, died in Paris at 2:25 a.m. at 77 after abdication in 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson. He will be buried in Frogmore beside Queen Victoria after his body flies to England on a Royal Air Force jet.
