Boise Cascade particleboard plant to start May 30 in Ukiah

Boise Cascade announces its new $7 million particleboard plant near Ukiah will begin day shift production on Tuesday May 30 with 30 hourly workers and 16 supervisors. Full capacity by September will be 350 tons daily using waste sawmill byproducts, with 80 percent for furniture and 20 percent for floor underlay.

Dead Woman Identified After Gun Trace Near Mendocino Coast

The body of 22 year old Joan Therese Murray of Tustin was identified by dental records after a May 13 discovery off the Mendocino coast. An autopsy found a chest wound. investigators traced a .22 pistol linked to Murray through a sequence involving Fort Bragg residents and a pool cue trade. The case involved multiple women once suspected and a long statewide search, with ballistics tests pending in Washington D.C.

Judge halts patient transfers at Mendocino and Agnews

A temporary restraining order signed by Judge William Gallagher freezes transfers and preserves the current hospital census at Mendocino and Agnews State Hospitals. Ukiah Unified names new principals at Zeek and South Valley

Ukiah Unified board chose Brick Bralich of Redwood Valley to lead South Valley High and Aubrey Enoch from Pomolita to lead Zeek School for the coming year. Marion Clark will depart Zeek and Bralich’s successor at South Valley remains to be chosen. The district discussed speech therapy scope for about 200 students, reviewed insurance questions on earthquake-risk buildings, and approved bids and state and federal funding programs for 1972 73 including preschool and reading initiatives.

Mendocino County names representatives to North Coast commission

Supervisor Ernie Banker of Ukiah and Mayor Bernard Vaughn of Fort Bragg were named Mendocino County representatives to the North Coast Planning and Development Commission. The panel will include one city and one county supervisor from each member county, with Humboldt due to act June 5. The first meeting will be in Ukiah after Humboldt approval.

Board of Supervisors Back State Measures for Tax Relief

The board unanimously passed two proposed state measures to aid property taxpayers. An Assembly constitutional amendment would bar new mandates on counties or cities without a new revenue source beyond property tax. Senate Bill 91 would shift operation of community colleges to state control. Supervisor Harvey Sawyers called the college bill wishful thinking.

Mendocino County unemployment dips but stays high

April unemployment in Mendocino County stood at 9.5 percent with 18 200 jobs, up 800 from February. Gains came from vineyard and lumber sectors while the state average for April was 6 percent. A separate Dallas robbery case ended with the bandit surrendering after a nine hour spree.
