Ukiah council to hear protest over license fee increases

Auto dealers led by Attorney Conrad Cox oppose a proposed revision to Ukiah business license fees set to rise July 1 arguing the scale is arbitrary and discriminatory. Council and Downtown Merchants Association say the changes aim to raise revenue and better align fees by business type and gross revenue.

Nixon rejects two House subpoenas for watergate tapes

President Nixon refused to turn over two House Judiciary Committee subpoenas for tapes and documents linked to Watergate. White House lawyer James D. St. Clair announced Nixon would not release the letters or most tapes, offering only a partial transcript of an April 4 1972 call related to ITT contributions.

Nokomis candidates draw 100 voters at school meeting

More than 100 voters attended a Nokomis school forum to hear county office candidates address issues and answer questions. Viola Richardson outlined duties of clerk recorder, Deborah White pressed for full participation and fair election law administration, Tom Thurman pitched business and teaching credentials, with other candidates and absences noted.

Time to Build Urges Yes Vote on Ukiah Unified Bonds

Pre election mail targets Ukiah Unified voters as the Time to Build campaign promotes Prop A a 2 2 million bond for elementary renovations and Prop B a 49 cent tax increase to fund a new high school. The committee led by Ray Worster and Virginia Maurer calls for ending double sessions and busing.

Geothermal lease surge draws 600 plus applications countywide

BLM Ukiah reports heavy activity with 600 plus geothermal lease applications on government land from the Bay Area to Covelo. The Geysers area has several leases granted including an 80 acre Signal Oil Co. tract in Mendocino. Open bidding occurred in January as first federal geothermal leases are issued with a 514 million dollar value across 12 tracts and a 15 percent royalty plus annual rent.

County seeks 347200 for storm road repairs

Public Works Director Budge Campbell told county supervisors an additional 347200 is needed for January and March storm damage repairs on county roads. Funds are sought before June 30 with a report expected next week. The board directed the administrator to work with the auditor on funding methods. Campbell also proposed a state design and construction engineering agreement under the emergency repair program for about 1 million dollars in federal aid road work including Mountain View Road Branscomb Road and Mendocino Pass Road.

Narrow escape as three injured in Cypress collision

At 10 10 p m three people sustained minor injuries and a fourth broke an arm after a crash at N Bush and Cypress. A 1965 Comet driven by Agustino Hernandez struck the Engstrom home at 497 Cypress after colliding with a southbound car driven by Gary Bozarth.

Sister of Covelo man killed in shooting in critical condition

The older sister of John Henry Azbill, 22, was struck by a car driven by Lawrence Tillotson Jr., 40, on Main Street in Covelo at 6 a.m. today and is in critical condition at Howard Memorial Hospital in Willits after surgery for multiple injuries. Police and sheriff investigators are probing the incident.
