Ukiah and Vallejo stars lead Friday tiny meet

At Santa Rosa Friday night Ukiah, Vallejo, and Marin County clubs vied for the varsity title. Rick Cail led a 24 foot 10 inch long jump and a 9.8 in the 100 while Jerry Johnson clocked 14.3 in the highs and lows to pace Vallejo. Ukiah’s David Gein set a school record with 1:57.9 in the 880, finishing second in a photo finish. Norm Schmitz won the B shot put at 46-11¼ and placed sixth in the discus as Vallejo faced late heat in the two mile program adjustments.

Smith sets 400m mark at Big Ten track meet

Smith runs 44.8 in the 400 meters, breaking Otis Davis 1960 Olympic best and Adolph Plummer ASU record. Iowa upsets Michigan State as Big Ten outdoor meet features Kansas, Nebraska, and strong relay times. Ryan wins both mile and half mile. Kansas earns 12 points, Nebraska 9.5 in a crowded, high weekend.

Aaron pushes NL crown bid as Braves topple Pirates

Hank Aaron powered to two homers and two singles in four at bats to lift his average to .333 and seize the NL home run lead with 11 and RBIs with 29 as Atlanta defeated Pittsburgh 7-2. He frustrated three-infielder shifts while reaching base twice more in a day of varied results across the circuit. The Phillies beat Cincinnati 2-1 in a long 18-inning affair, Houston stopped San Francisco 2-0, St Louis edged New York 3-2, and Dodgers split with Cubs. The day also saw Boston sweep Cleveland and Detroit overwhelm New York before rain halted Baltimore at Washington.

Billups Wins At Lakeport Opening Night Race

Ukiah's Darrell Billups won the super modified hardtop main event at Lakeport on opening night as Terry Rossiter outran Willie Laster for the stock car main. Ukiah Speedway opened with time trials at 7 30 p m. Don Snow set a probable 13 46 lap record in a super modified hardtop. Cuellar hurls Astros to first shutout. Alou lines out to end game.

Napa Edges Ukiah In Key Golf Match For NBL Title

Napa varsity golfers clinched at least a tie for the North Bay League crown by beating Ukiah 10 to 5 on the Silverado course. Kenny Banker led Napa with an 81 in the No 1 match but Ukiah’s Jimmy Strong and Jan Jakovac earned key points to keep the title race close. Strong finished 10-0 on the season and Jakovac 9-1, as Napa moved to 8-1 and eyed the final makeup match for a 9-1 finish.
