California Senate legalizes laetrile after debate

California Senate votes 28 to 7 to legalize manufacture sale and dispensing of laetrile while maintaining bans on promoting it as a cure. The measure SB245 moves to the Assembly and is supported by Gov. Brown. In a separate report Begin promises more Jewish settlements if elected prime minister amid West Bank tensions.

Moore pleads guilty in Ford shooting case upheld by judge

In San Francisco federal court Judge Samuel Conti denied reopening Sara Jane Moore's case. Moore, 47, was sentenced to life for firing at former President Ford outside the St. Francis Hotel on September 22, 1975, and has served at Terminal Island Prison since January 16, 1976. Separately in Washington the Senate approved consolidating energy agencies into a cabinet department by a 74 to 10 vote, supporting Carter's energy plan.

Mostly fair tonight and Friday with increasing clouds in the extreme north Friday afternoon. Fort Bragg near 50s to 60s and Ukiah in the low to mid 70s.

Safety concerns rise over Low Gap Bush crossing traffic

Ukiah Unified board members voiced grave worries about future safety near Frank Zeek school, especially at the Low Gap Bush crossing. Principal Bralich stressed continuing safety measures as accidents occur despite guards. District plans extend Despina Drive to ease congestion. Yokayo will close to young children as transfers shift to Pomolita and Ukiah middle. Dennis Denny pledged action before next school year to reduce hazards. Board also reviewed 1977-78 budget draft with deficits and potential program cuts if state aid falters.

Ukiah council approves home energy hookup refunds

Ukiah residents building new homes after June 1 may receive refunds on electrical service hookup fees and developers can get reim bursements after occupancy in 12 months. The policy, not retroactive, applies to residential builds including apartments and excludes commercial projects. The plan means an average single family home pays about 319 dollars in fees plus a non refundable 135 dollar connection fee.

Loggers head to D C to oppose park expansion

A Northwest Timber Association convoy of loggers from California Oregon Washington and Alaska plans to meet President Carter on May 24 at the Capitol steps. They argue wilderness expansion would cost lumber payroll and threaten 3000 jobs in Northern California while targeting Redwood National Park and Redwood Creek expansion. The group will stop overnight in Lincoln then travel through Iowa Chicago Indiana Kentucky and Maryland toward Washington.

Lumber truck overturns on Highway 101 near Ridgewood

An Arcata lumber truck driven by Gary Dahl dozed off and overturned on Highway 101 south of Ridgewood, tying up traffic for an hour. Dahl escaped with minor injuries. A secondary crash at the same location injured Helen Goodwin minorly. Thelma Barrett caused the rear impact. A three car crash on Highway 20 near Potter Valley left driver Robert McCoy possibly cited for intoxication. McCoy injured. A two car Ukiah area crash on Ukiah Boonville Road injured four, Edna Hazel most seriously.
