Candidates Night mirrors many similar pre election forums

The League of Women Voters sponsored a county Candidates Night at Frank Zeek School with incumbents Barbero and Bar bero facing challengers Burt Banzhaf and Burgess Williams. Both sides argued on taxes, services, and a proposed atomic energy plant while attendees questioned planning, juvenile hall costs, and Mendocino State Hospital usage.

Flood board election called off as only one incumbent filed

The five member Russian River Flood Control and Water Improvement District board will be filled with one new member after only one incumbent filed for reelection. Charles Shimmin and Chris Keiffer sought reelection. William H. A. Smith did not file. Frank Milone remains on the board. Knudsen, a Ukiah accountant, filed on the final day to join the board.

Judge Maintains TRO On Albion Flats Campground Case

Cook appeals the campground closure by filing an answer seeking permission for operation under reasonable terms. The county cites sewage disposal violations. the TRO was briefly lifted then reinstated with a formal complaint. Women's Liberation group debuts at Ukiah concert

Ukiah's new Ukiah Women's Liberation group makes its public debut with a benefit concert at the Ukiah gym. Chairwoman Sherry Sanders of Hopland leads a 63-member effort to run concessions featuring breads cookies carrot cupcakes organic juice lemonade and coffee. Proceeds fund a planned Women's Center in Ukiah to provide a local meeting place for women and welcome financial donations.

Washington reports Nixon's upcoming summit with Soviet leaders may yield an agreement for the USSR to buy about 200 million dollars of U S grain annually for a decade. Last year Moscow bought 135 million dollars of corn barley and oats to boost meat production.

Group demands firing of NCO chief Mon Pere

Thirty one Mendocino and Lake Counties residents demand the dismissal of Thomas Mon Pere as executive director of North Coast Opportunities Inc. The protest cites alleged refusals to transport board members, prevent program initiatives, bypassed approvals, and staff intimidation. The board will meet May 25 in Lakeport to consider charges.
