Germany approves pacts easing East West tension

Bonn approves nonaggression pacts with the Soviet Union and Poland amid Brandt’s push for peace, facing CDU opposition ahead of Nixon’s Moscow visit. War protestor burns dolls at courthouse

A Vietnam War protest in Ukiah Redwood Valley saw a teacher pour gasoline on six baby dolls and set them ablaze on the courthouse steps. The demonstration drew spectators including the county board of supervisors as police and fire crews extinguished the fire. No arrests were made and authorities pledged further inquiry.

May readings show dates and temperatures with 16 67/48 and 16 66/44, rainfall 25.03 this year and 38.12 last year.

Paralyzed Wallace celebrates wins in two primaries

Gov. George Corley Wallace, recovering from a Monday shooting, swept Michigan and Maryland primaries as delegates shifted. Returns showed Wallace leading in Michigan with 51 percent and Maryland with 40 percent while McGovern and Humphrey split second and third in each state. Wallace spoke from his hospital bed with a smile as his aides planned to attend the convention from a wheelchair if needed.

Campground protest sways county board hearing

Fort Bragg residents joined younger demonstrators outside the courthouse as planners heard James Cummings appeal over a use permit for a Hare Creek campground south of town. The 3-3 planning vote with one abstention delayed a decision. debate cited septic fears, access routes, and public beach rights while opponents warned of esthetic and property value impacts. The case returns June 15 before a final board ruling June 27.

County planning commission faces heavy agenda tomorrow

The county planning commission will hear six use permit and six rezoning cases plus four tentative map requests for subdivisions. Subdivisions include Rancho Cielo four miles east of Highway 1 and Navarro Ridge Road, Potter Valley Ranchettes south of Hopper's Corners, Cliff Dwellers Unit No. 2 south of Point Arena, and Peachland Ranch north of Boonville. Use permits feature mobile home parks and campgrounds from Fleming east of Calpella, Hand near Leggett, Clark east of Little River, Milone in Old Hopland, Brooke west of Willits, with reconsideration of Clark's park. Milone and Bower, Emma Johnson, Robert King, and Georgia-Pacific seek various rezoning actions north or east of several towns.
