McNally’s comeback tops Orioles hot stretch

Dave McNally, out two years with arm trouble, returned to form for Baltimore in a 50 victory over Minnesota. He scattered one hit over 13 innings in relief and helped the Orioles sweep the Dodgers in the 1966 World Series context, while a pitching staff rebound earned him Comeback Player of the Year honors. Elsewhere, Detroit beat Chicago 2-1 in 10 innings. Kansas City defeated Cleveland 5-2. In the NL, Atlanta beat New York 6-5 and Philadelphia crushed Cincinnati.

Pancho Gonzalez Flies into a Temper in MSG Opener

Pancho Gonzalez, age 41, lost two matches in the Madison Square Garden Invitational. He fell to Roy Emerson 8-5 and to Dennis Ralston 8-7 in a tiebreaking format. After the Emerson defeat he vowed never to play indoors again and hurled insults at the scoring system and the venue. In the Ralston match he led 7-7 before a late run by Ralston. Gonzalez then smashed a ball into the stands and left the court in anger.

Nevada schools join WCAC loop

Nevada-Las Vegas and Nevada-Reno joined the West Coast Athletic Conference at the spring meeting, replacing San Jose State and UC Santa Barbara as WCAC members. The conference added Nevada schools and retained Santa Clara, San Francisco, Pepperdine, Loyola, Pacific, and St. Mary’s. A three-year TV contract with TV Sports was approved, and 1970 basketball and baseball schedules were tentatively approved.

Oregon State challenges Pac-8 track supremacy

Oregon State coach Benny Jinger hopes to dethrone defending champions Southern Cal as the Pac-8 track and field meet opens in Eugene. Led by Lennox Miller and pole vaulter Bob Seagren, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, USC and Washington State pursue titles with close competition expected in trials and finals. Seagren faces strong rivals. the meet could hinge on the mile relay.

Ukiah golfers near title with key showdown looming

Ukiah Varsity golf team is one win from clinching the NBL 1969 title after beating Hogan 11.43 on Vallejo Blue Rock. Napa leads Ukiah by standings, with a 2 p.m. Tuesday match at Ukiah Municipal. a Ukiah loss or a tie could yield Napa the top spot. Ukiah’s Jan Jako vac battled Lynn Jones in a 7-15, 144-1% medal standoff. Jim Hozell, Verle Steppe, and Mike Gulyash posted strong scores as Ukiah fights to constrain Napa and secure the championship.

Stanford and USC vie for Pac Eight golf title at Rainier

At Rainier Golf Course Seattle the defending champ Stanford and USC expected to duel in a 72-hole medal meet. Yokayo Archers Form New Club In Ukiah Area

Yokayo Archers plan a charter meeting Monday May 19 at 7 30 p m in the County Library Building 108 W Clay Street to form a National Field Archery Association sanction group. All ages and genders invited with early joiner savings and support from Sebastopol Bowmen to meet NFAA safety and training requirements.

USC and UCLA Set for Pac-8 Tennis Showdown

In Stanford California, Southern California and UCLA advanced easily in the Pac-8 tennis tournament first round. USC beat Oregon State 9-0 and UCLA defeated Washington State 9-0 as Stanford edged Washington 6-3 and California beat Oregon 8-1. Bob Lutz led USC with a 6-1 singles win over Raul Hernandez. doubles pairs Loyo-Mayo and Lara of USC won 6-4 6-3 over Hernandez and Gardiner.

Hot boats back on Clear Lake for 1969 meet

Nor Cal Boat and Ski Club hosts the second of nine championship events at California's largest natural lake. About 50 water skiers and 20 hot boats are expected to compete as races run from 10 a.m. off the new Aurora Marina clipped by the Aurora Club of Nice. Seven age divisions cover both men and women with a 2 1/2 mile ski course and boats reaching up to 90 mph.

Aerofoils banned on international racing circuits

The International Sporting Commission of the International Automobile Federation announced an immediate ban on aerofoils used on race cars. The ban cites grave danger to spectators and drivers, following incidents of wings detaching at high speed and after Monaco practice where aerofoil cars set unofficial track records.

Pargas tops Fjord's Smorgette 7-4 in Pony League opener

In Anton Stadium Thursday night Pargas beat Fjord's Smorgette 7-4 as both teams outhit each other 12 to 9. Key plays included Steve McCarthy stealing second and scoring on an error, Brad McDonald delivering a triple, and Bill Roby scoring on a miscue in the sixth inning. Fjord's Dan Vanoven and Dan Nichols had two hits each as the nightcap saw Crawford Lumber edge Pal ace Sport and Hobby Shop 7-6 with eight hits to six.

Pentiful runs in South Ukiah baseball action

Palace Sport and Hobby piled up 11 hits and 12 runs in a 12 to 2 South Ukiah Little League win over Masonite. Kiwanis edged Prescription Center 15 to 11 in a slugfest. Don Schwank hit a two run triple for Palace in the third, while Greg Sanchez pitched six strong innings for Palace. Rex Reed, Steve Beaman, Wade Bayman and Richard Sams added two baggers for Palace.
