Washington Meeting Backed for National Highway Plan

Assemblyman Belotti and Congressman Clausen in Washington urged Senate adoption of a bill to map future highway needs. They met with Rep. Fallon, author of the bill, hoping to extend the Interstate system and include U S 101 from the Golden Gate to the Oregon line. Fallon’s bill requests a comprehensive future needs study by the U S Bureau of Public Roads with state cooperation, aiming for completion by 1967.

Wife Beating Case Yields One Year Jail Term

James L. Brumley of Ukiah drew 360 days in jail for battery and probation violation after being picked up on a bench warrant. The sentence split 180 days for probation violation and 180 days for the battery charge filed by his wife Molly. Brumley had earlier been placed on probation for beating his wife and was barred from molesting or visiting her at her residence. In other court actions, Harry E. Lathrop and Ernest G. Coen were bound over to Superior Court on a charge of escaping from Chamberlain Creek Honor Camp. A grand theft auto charge was dismissed in the interest of justice after a Division of Forestry pickup was stolen and later recovered near Healdsburg. They are set to appear in Department 2 at 9:30 on May 21.

Sheriff Units Plan Weekend Training With Volunteer Groups

Sheriff Reno H Bartolomie announces a weekend training program with the Eden Valley Ranch as headquarters. The event unites Mendocino County volunteer groups the Sheriff's Air Squadron 4 Wheel Patrol and Mounted Posse to bolster search and rescue for missing persons planes and hikers. The units operate separately but will coordinate on missions and include families in an overnight camp with a barbecue Saturday night.

Library Marks 50 Years At State and Clay Site

Ukiah Public Library observes a Golden Jubilee week to celebrate fifty years of service. Librarian Frieda Winter announced events at 320 S State Street built with an $8000 Carnegie grant on land donated by Miss Carrie Garsey, opened in 1914 after earlier quarters from 1906. Historical items including original incorporation documents and Carnegie portrait will be displayed. Further notices to follow.

Four candidates endorse Hopland bookmobile plan at PTA panel

In Hopland, four candidates for 1st District Supervisor spoke at a Hopland PTA forum titled Elections Affect Education. Ray Hudson, Mrs. Shirley Jacobsen, Bill Proctor, and John Mayfield Jr discussed campaign issues, backed the County Library Bookmobile, and urged support for Proposition A and continued county library funding. The Hopland School Trustees also endorsed Mendocino County Library Demonstration and its continuation.

Blood Bank Here Sunday in Ukiah

The Sonoma County mobile blood bank visits Ukiah Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial building on Seminary Street. Donors may give in the name of Lin Ford, who has undergone four major operations and drawn 58 pints of blood. only black coffee or orange juice may be consumed before giving.

At 11:23 p.m. Thursday firefighters responded to a false alarm at the intersection of Main and Church Streets. No injuries or damage reported, all units stood down after investigation.

Lawmakers Take Off For 3 Days

California lawmakers adjourn for a three day break after advancing a 3.6 billion budget and 254 dispute items to conference. The Senate passed a revised 3.6 billion budget 31 to 1. the Assembly rejected it and sent the measure to a three member conference. Conferees from both houses were named to negotiate the budget and an education aid bill.
