John Pfeifer Receives State Medal of Valor
Foreman John A Pfeifer of the Department of Conservation will be honored by Governor Brown and State officials as winner of the State Medal of Valor. In June 1961 he rescued 14 year old Cathy Cullens from a riptide near Solana Reef, risking his life to reach her as Bonnie Heinlein was pulled toward deeper water. Pfeifer brought Cullens to shore exhausted and she was revived after 10 to 15 minutes with a lifeguard’s aid. The medal will be presented at the California State Employees Association dinner at 6 p.m. Saturday in the World Trade Center San Francisco.
