House panel approves 150 million crime victim aid plan

A House Judiciary subcommittee approved a three year program totaling 150 million dollars to reimburse states up to 50 000 per person for violent crime victims. The panel rejected a 20 000 per person ceiling urged by the administration while Ronald Gainer backed the bill with a lower per person cap.

Senate panel may hear Bell on voter registration memo

Senate Rules Committee Chair Howard Cannon said he will offer Attorney General Griffin Bell a chance to testify on a Justice Department memo that questions the administration’s instant voter registration bill amid claims it could boost vote fraud. The memo was released as the House Administration Committee advanced the bill 17 to 8. Also, the Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled 3.1 million Ms.Coffee machines after receiving more than 150 complaints of fire shock or sparking linked to teflon coated wires in the upper compartment.

Carter visits ancestral home as campaign style tour

President Carter sped through Newcastle upon Tyne on a campaign style visit to the ancestral home of George Washington and said he was inspired by tens of thousands who greeted him with shouts of Hi Jimmy. He will join six other leaders at a weekend economic summit in London.

Unemployment Rate Dips to 7 Percent in April

April unemployment falls to 7 percent, lowest since early recession. About 90 million employed, with construction adding 75,000 jobs and factory 80,000 as total employment rises. Long-term unemployment drops to 1.8 million. part-time workers ease. Administration cites weather and stimulus package as factors.

Energy plan clears first House hurdle in pricing proposal

The House Government Affairs Committee approved a Carter energy bill 35 to 2 to create a cabinet level Energy Department with pricing powers for oil and gas. The panel reversed an earlier provision making the government the sole buyer of imported fuels and backed a compromise where the energy secretary would propose prices to a three member board.

Lakeport councilman sues Bunce over recall campaign

Lakeport council member Paul Relei files a civil suit in Superior Court against Frank Bunce leader of the recall campaign against Relei and Randall Rashe. The suit seeks 25000 in punitive damages and unspecified actual damages for defaming Relei. Relei is represented by Pano Stephens.

Mothers Day Ice Cream Social and Band Concert in Ukiah

Ukiah observes Mother's Day with an old fashioned ice cream social and concert in the municipal park. The Ukiahi band joins the Redwood Regionaires Barbershop Chorus and the Ukiah Dixieland ensemble for a Sunday program from 1 to 4 pm with seating available and folding chairs welcome. Proceeds support the Ukiahi Band and Choral Club travel fund for a Victoria B C trip. A joint concert by the Redwood Regionaires and Ukiah Dixieland Serenaders is set for Chessall gym at 7:59 pm to aid choral funds, rain plan moves to Chessall.

Merchants push petitions to cut downtown parking rates

Five petitions circulated by School Street area merchants call for reduced downtown rates and new public lots. Bill Dolan of Dolan's Sporting House cites 300 signatures on day one and says petitions will go to the city council May 18.
