Thomas of Phoenix was able to eat light foods and give interviews Sunday as Britain's first heart transplant patient Frederick West recovered from his operation and joked with his wife through a glass window. West’s procedure used the heart of a 26 year old construction worker. A second patient Rizor, who died after receiving a 43 year old donor heart, had briefly recovered enough to ask for something stronger than apple juice before dying from oxygen deprivation due to lung disease. Dr Christiaan Barnard, pioneer of heart transplants, waited in Cape Town for another donor for his third subject as his second patient, Dr Philip Blaiberg, has survived over four months.
