City Council Opens With Historic Opening Prayer

Ukiah city council began its sessions with a short invocation by Rev. Arthur Wallace of Ukiah Methodist Church to add dignity to deliberations. Mayor Leonard Nix plans rotating religious officiants for future openings as Ukiah follows California cities in religious practice. Paul Sutterley spoke for 350 chamber merchants seeking 1500 for Christmas decorations and 1500 for chamber promotion, noting last year’s funding and private fundraising. He argued promotions are needed to keep local shoppers and boost sales tax revenue. Sutterley cited street-use rights at 125 rental each, with only five last year, and urged city support to sustain Christmas displays. John Wonder urged investing to gain revenue.

County to receive 149 600 dollars in taxes for 1954 55

Mendocino county is expected to receive 149 600 dollars during the fiscal year 1954 55 from in ict taxes included in state motor vehicle license fees. Robert C. Kirkwood state controller said today. A total of 69800 is expected to be allotted to cities in the county from the same fund. Ukiah will receive 38000 Fort Bragg 17700 Willits 12400 Point Arena 1700 Kirkwood predicted a total of 77536000 will be available for distribution to California cities and counties a nine per cent increase over the current fiscal year.

Public Hearing On Disposal Site In Ukiah Area

A public hearing will be held Monday at 8 PM in the courthouse chambers of the Board of Supervisors to discuss sites and methods for a county sanitary disposal site. A preceding hearing at 2 PM will address the proposed Ukiah Valley Sanitation District, with encouraging attendance from interested residents.

Graves Proposes Road Focus and State DOT Plan

Democratic candidate Richard Graves outlined a highway oriented platform for California stressing open undeveloped areas, a coordinated State Department of Transportation, and new schools to meet booming births and migration. United Increases Hawaii Flights

United Air Lines expands its Hawaii service from San Francisco by 50 percent starting May 10, adding two DCH Mainliner coach flights to Honolulu for a total of two weekly. The five weekly departures begin at 8:45 a.m. PDT, arriving Honolulu at 3:15 p.m. HST, with trips on Sun Mon Tue Thu Fri and Friday night. First class Strato cruiser services remain three weekly. Speed Reduced South of Willits

The State Department of Public Works announced a 45 mph speed limit on about half a mile of the Redwood Highway south of Willits, from Holly Street to the city line.
