An American official said the full approval of the mission is needed to bolster Marine operations as Santo prepares for Sunday deployment. The statement, though fragmented, indicates ongoing coordination with American authorities amid rising regional tensions.
Unanimous First District Democratic caucus approval of a resolution calls for an in depth socio economic study before a Redwood national park is pursued. Administrator Hugo Fisher argues federal aid should support a Redwood national parkway and better watershed protection while considering alternate routes and economic impacts. A joint federal state private task force is proposed to examine the national park, parkway, and master plans with representatives from Interior, Agriculture, and other agencies.

In California the Republican Assembly criticizes Labor Secretary Wirtz and questions his directives. In Honolulu heavy rains flood windward Oahu forcing hundreds from the Kahaluu Valley area.
Four injury accidents over the weekend kept the Ukiah Highway Patrol busy. On Saturday on Highway 128 west of Mt House Road a car driven by Mélvin Nightingale collided with a Jeep driven by John Kelley with Kelley sustaining minor injuries. Nightingale said glare and dirt blinded him and he was driving on the wrong side. Sunday at 1 40 p m Donald Taylor veered off Orr Springs Road two miles west of Highway 101 injuring himself and three others who sought their own doctors. A two car crash on Lov ers Lane near Highway 101 left Evelyn Tsarnas and another driver with minor injuries.
Viet Nam dispatch from Saigon reports three battalions of U S Army paratroopers will land in the next days to defend Bien Hoa and Vung Tau bases. An advance party arrived today as 30,000 Americans are already in country including a 10,000 man Marine brigade near Da Nang. Vietnamese commanders claim a major victory in the Ekong River Delta with 162 guerrillas killed and 47 captured, and a found arsenal suggests a shift from guerrilla to conventional warfare.
SACRAMENTO California's legislature with seven weeks left in the six month 1965 session headed into a crucial week. The Senate faced a fight over reapportionment and the Assembly possibly over pornography.
A fire department response Saturday at 9 42 p m to Marvin Dooley's residence due to an overheated oil furnace. No damage or injuries reported.
Terry Gordon Russell, 26, known escape artist, slipped from county jail between 7 and 7:10 am Sunday using a blanket as a rope. He had been back in custody after escaping Parlin Forks Honor Camp on March 24 for robbery and burglary and stealing a jeep. The pursuit focuses on how he unlocked a wire window and descended to a ledge near the recorder’s office. Deputies recovered the blanket. sheriff’s officials probe the surrounding lapse as an unusual jail breakout reported in several years.
More than 150 people attended a dinner honoring retiring Road Commissioner Kempe Richardson at Brooktrails Lodge. Prominent attendees included State Sen. Frank S. Petersen, Supervisors Sawyers and Avila, former Supervisor Poulos and families, and Tax Collector William Clow. Master of ceremonies Toby OBayley recalled Richardson's long county service. gift presented by the road department. Richardson leaves to join Howard and Persky, forming a firm with Richardson.
The U S Plywood Corp sawmill near Douglas City was destroyed by a Saturday fire blamed on gusty winds. The $300,000 loss left 19 workers idle. officials said the mill was not operating at the time and the firm does not plan rebuilding. Some nearby smaller buildings were spared.
A 50 mile an hour commuter train was halted Sunday after a young hooligan threw an egg at the windshield. The impact splattered the glass and blocked the driver’s vision, temporarily stopping service.
Washington reports a Senate split over a ban on state and local poll taxes as debate resumes on a bill to guarantee Negro voting rights. Democrats and Republicans seek a compromise substitute to drop anti poll tax provisions, while southern senators threaten to oppose the bill in its current form. The substitute would have the Justice Department test constitutionality of poll taxes. Other items note Medicare coverage questions for elderly workers, districting gerrymandering limits, SEATO pledges from Southeast Asia allies, and GAO requests for 1966 operating funds.
In Los Angeles the California Federation of Young Democrats closed its annual convention urging the U S to halt bombing in North Viet Nam and press for a 90 day UN supervised truce. They backed President Johnson’s call for unconditional negotiations and questioned sending 14 000 troops to protect U S nationals in the Dominican Republic praising the move as jeopardizing U S foreign policy integrity.
Sonoma County records show Loren Dean McCrillis, 38, of Fairfax, died after a jump gone wrong when his main parachute ripped at 3200 feet. He deployed an emergency chute too late and struck the ground before it slowed his fall, according to Deputy Coroner Don Nortel.
