Jobholders rise in April but unemployment hits 34-year high
Washington reports April saw more job holders than in March yet unemployment climbed to 8.9 percent, the highest since 1941, as more people sought work. The 0.2 point rise over March 8.7 percent reflects a fragile economy with data debated by officials. Alan Greenspan cautioned that recession may be ending and stabilization could begin in the second quarter. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes more people were counted as unemployed.
