County workers to receive overtime pay change in 1969 70

United Press reports deputies cleared a Stanford administration building after militants seized parts of Encina Hall. Police were called to the Stanford campus to assess damage as two Columbia University buildings remained under militant control. University President Kenneth Pitzer said the action was taken with reluctance and regret.

Ukiah Crime Rate Surges in Police Year Report
Ukiah's 1968 police annual report shows a 21 percent rise in felony offenses from 1967, driven by bad checks narcotics violations and forged prescriptions. County warns on agricultural preserve tax breaks
Assessor Webb Brown told the Wednesday board of supervisors that many landowners with avicultu ral preserve status or pending agreements face loss of tax breaks in 1969 70. May 15 is the filing deadline for preserve agreements with 31 applications on hand, only a few signed so far. Without agreement the assessor must value land at market rate. zoning alone won’t sustain agricultural preserve. The board urged clearer guidelines before placing more land in preserves to avoid hurting the tax base. Ted Eriksen Jr. cited county data showing orchards and grapes contributing a large share of agricultural value. Planning consultant Jim Barrett projected only about 60 acres of the area would constitute a sizable portion of preserved land.

Five U S mountaineers die on Himalayan summit bid
Five American climbers and two Nepalese guides were killed scaling Mt Dhauligiri, a 26 975 foot peak. Expedition leader Boyd Everett Jr and John Vin Hoeman were among the victims. the accident occurred during the first Southeast ridge attempt.
