Seven killed as B52 bomber crashes into Orlando homes

A UPI report says a B52 bomber making an emergency landing at McCoy Air Force Base crashed into the Silver Beach area north of the base. Seven crewmen were killed and eight homes were set ablaze as wreckage and jet fuel fire spread over nearby properties. Emergency units responded as the accident left the base hospital overwhelmed with burn victims and some injured sent to other hospitals. An eyewitness described the plane tipping and breaking apart before impact.

Ukiah considers face lift for nine county roads

Public works director Budge Campbell asked the county supervisors to overlay nine heavily traveled roads near Ukiah during the State Street resurfacing set for April 10. He cited a three to four mile project at about 30 000 dollars total with 9 dollars per ton material cost if done separately, or 9 dollars per ton if done concurrently with the contractor in town.

Council Night Set for Ukiah Candidates Speaking

A City Council Candidates Night sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Ukiah will air Monday from 7 to 8 30 PM in Channel 13 studios. Incumbents Sterling Norgard Donald K Scotto and Jack Simpson and challengers Ralph L Raines Gary M Weinkauf will each present seven minutes and viewers may call in questions. Mrs Waldo Cook League TV chairman will moderate. The League is a nonpartisan group promoting political responsibility and citizen participation.

Fort Bragg park district hearing set for Monday

The Local Agency Formation Commission will hear a continuation on the Fort Bragg Recreation District at 2 PM Monday. If formed the district would unify park and recreation planning for Fort Bragg area. Two Ukiah annexation items are also on the agenda, including airport parcels and the old sewer farm, scheduled for 2:30 PM.

Cloudy North state with rain in far north vicinity

Cloudy conditions prevail in northeastern California with rain likely in extreme north late tonight and spreading through the area by Saturday. Expect warmer nights inland, with Ukiah reaching a high around 75 and a low near 48.

City to Activate New Traffic Lights on State Streets

City Engineer Al Kruth says new signals will go live within two weeks at Norton Low Gap Mill and Talmage with updates for Standley Perkins and Gobbi. A master computer system will control the network while heat tests in Sacramento and Ukiah reach 160 and 140 degrees respectively. The Gobbi three way concept may later extend to Perkins.

Thousands of eggs awaited for Ukiah Lions Easter Hunt

Ukiah youngsters, from one to eight years old, will hunt thousands of wrapped eggs Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Ukiah Lions Club Easter Egg Hunt held at Municipal Park and the Ukiah Municipal Golf Course. Co chairmen Roger Wren and Doug Pennington oversee age based hunting zones with gold foil eggs for prizes, rain or shine.
