Congress Approves Minimum Wage Hike to 2 Dollars
Congress passed a compromise bill raising the federal minimum wage to 2.00 an hour by May 1 and stepping to 2.10 next Jan 1 and 2.30 on Jan 1, 1976. It expands coverage to 54 million workers including domestic workers and government employees in chain stores, with overtime rules extended to about 8 million more. Nixon said he will not veto the measure, and the law could take effect by May 1.
